Job Summary

We are seeking full-time postdoctoral scholars to lead and contribute to work in UChicago’s new Human-Centered Weather Forecasting Initiative. We expect the postdoctoral role to be a one-year position.

The Postdoctoral scholar will work closely with the faculty directors, Professors Michael Kremer (Economics), Pedram Hassanzadeh (Climate and AI), and Amir Jina (Climate and Economics). This position offers a unique opportunity to advance scientific knowledge and its practical applications in a rapidly evolving field and contribute to UChicago’s extensive efforts in climate and AI research, including the AI for Climate Initiative (AICE), Development Innovation Lab (DIL), Institute for Climate and Sustainable Growth, and Data Science Institute.

The expectation is that one-year postdocs in this role will launch successful research projects in collaboration with Faculty Directors and others, before transitioning to academic positions at other institutions. 

Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Faculty Directors, conduct research in the field of Human-Centered Weather Forecasts. Research priorities will be set in conversation with the Faculty Directors. The supervising faculty will provide time to publish the postdocs’ job market paper and other papers from the PhD that are well on the road to being ready to submit to journals. (95%)
  • The postdocs will provide input on cross-cutting activities, outreach, or public goods for the Human-Centered Weather Forecast Initiative as required (5%).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates may be trained in a variety of disciplines, but emphasis will be placed on prior experience working on topics related to agriculture or environmental data and analysis. 
  • PhD in Agricultural Meteorology, Agricultural Economics, Climate Science, Data Science, Atmospheric Science, Physical Oceanography, Applied and Computational Mathematics, Physics, Engineering,or related field by the start of the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Research or fieldwork in developing countries is preferred.
  • Experience working with data sets pertaining to developing countries is preferred.
  • Interdisciplinary research experience is preferred.

Preferred competencies

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Working Conditions

  • Postdoctoral scholar positions are based in Chicago, IL. Additionally, candidates must be willing to travel flexibly including for field research.

Salary Range:

  • $61,008 – $91,800
